The big 4-0: part 4!

The tale of my big 4-0 birthday is almost complete. Almost. I still have to share the sweet little cabin where we stayed the night!

Allow J and I to welcome you to Abby’s Guest House. It’s just a mile walk from Main Street in Fredericksburg and I think it’s the most darling little hideaway ever! And when I say little, I do mean little — J is just over six feet tall. But I think it’s just perfect.

It’s filled with the most amazing ocean inspired details. Here’s the view when you enter the cabin, isn’t it just too cute for words? I’d love to live here all the time!

I couldn’t stop taking photos of this turquoise tree! In fact, our tree is silver and the ornaments are almost this shade of blue, too!

We ate breakfast in the main room while I stared at the tree and read design books. I didn’t know it at the time, but Abby’s is owned by Carolyn Moore, buyer and general manager for Red. (More on Red later.) Abby’s has been featured in HGTV and several magazines. And it’s no wonder since Carolyn has incorporated so many amazing touches.

One of my favorite little details was how she covered a window with old book pages fastened together with safety pins. Another was the hutch in the kitchen with blue bottles (I have a collection of blue glass that I keep on my kitchen windowsill) and more vintage finds. Love how the leaf shadows make an interesting pattern on the pages.

Then there was the postcard rack — I’m on the hunt for one of these now for my craft room! Wouldn’t it be great for holding swatches and ideas?

And last but not least? More vintage book pages hung over the headboard, and a wire frame lampshade — missing the shade — hung with ornaments and sea shells.

I’m totally smitten and hope to go back someday.

Thanks again to J for a wonderful birthday. I love you so much!

And thanks to all of you for your birthday wishes — they really made me smile!

(In case you missed it, here’s part 1 and parts 2-3 of my birthday tale. I’ve got a few more photos to share from our return to Austin, too. What a great great weekend!)

  12. The post card rack looks like a snack bag rack. Like you see at convenience stores to hold the small single serving bags of chips (Doritos, Fritos, Sun chips, etc) Next time you see the chip guy loading the shelves at the grocery store, ask how to get a chip bag rack. I’ve also found that if you write to the company ( on the back of the bags) and ask them how to get a rack, they may send you one.
