A rare treat

This fall we’ve seen a few Zebra Longwings fluttering around the passionflower vines in the back garden, but today was the first day I’ve been able to get a photo — such as they are:

She was laying eggs on the passionflower vines — lots of them — and fluttering around like mad. Plus it was windy to boot. But this is still a rare treat, as we don’t see Zebra Longwings in the Austin area that often.

The passionflower vine is called passaflora lutea and is the lighter green leaves in the photo. It’s clambering up a live oak tree.

I’ll have to be on the lookout for the caterpillars!

  1. Great photos! These guys are so hard to capture on film …I tried to get pics of them at the Texas State Fair buttefly exhibit a couple of weeks ago with no luck!
