Happy New Year!

I’ve been sitting here thinking about 2010 — it truly was a great year. I wanted to post a photo to capture my feelings and I thought of this one while because it is so full of meaning.

Photo taken in November while hiking at a park in Pennsylvania with J and my Dad — they’re both there in the photo, can you spot them? J’s in blue and my Dad’s in black + grey.

This was a great day hiking with J and my Dad that I’ll always remember. But what makes it even more special was that my Dad picked us up at the airport, and he had the whole day planned. And one of the best things? My ankle didn’t hurt at all!

You see, this time last year I had just had surgery to repair a torn ligament in my ankle. It had been bothering me for five years. Turns out that the ligaments weren’t keeping the bones in their proper place, so my leg bone was rubbing on my ankle bones. Even the vibrations from airplane rides would make it hurt for days. And hiking? Hiking could be torturous. (Not to mention even more painful when my ankle would suddenly give out and I’d go rolling down a hill. Ow.)  And I love hiking. And traveling to new places. So I kept doing it through the pain.

But finally, with J’s encouragement, I decided to have it looked at again (I’d been to 3 other doctors and physical therapy already). This time I found a doctor who literally put his finger right on the problem.

It’s still not 100% better — there was some nerve damage from the surgery — at first I couldn’t feel the top of my foot or curl my toes. But it’s slowly getting there. Yay!

So my resolution for 2011 is this: don’t give up! Yeah!

And if you’ve been putting off getting something looked at, go for it!

2011 hugs,
